Protein Interactions
Analysis
Using STRING, I obtained the images shown above. The top picture is a protein interaction web for the KCNQ1 protein and how it interacts with some of the proteins within humans that are known to play a role in how KCNQ1 protein functions. Each of these proteins that are shown to interact with KCNQ1p are further described in the table directly above this paragraph giving the color, abbreviation, full name, and a brief description of the job it does. On the right of the table are numbers indicating how confident the scientists are that the protein does indeed interact with KCNQ1p. All of the proteins shown on the list are well above 0.950 showing that there is strong confidence in the fact that the proteins shown do indeed interact with KCNQ1p.
Of the 10 listed proteins, 5 of them are known to interact directly with KCNQ1p. This is indicated by the blue lines in the web picture or the black dot in the table between the information and the probability score. The KCNE1-4 all form beta subunits with KCNQ1 that help to modulate the gating kinetics and enhance stability of the channel complex. The fact that there are four subunits that all do relatively the same task for KCNQ1 strikes me as a little curious and perhaps redundant. Maybe there is something each one of them does differently to KCNQ1 the makes it a requirement to have all four interacting with KCNQ1 or they interact at different times.. The
